A look at scenes from the five films nominated for best animated short at the 86th Annual Academy Awards. (HOLLYWOOD ASYLUM) - The five films nominated for the 2014 Academy Award in the animated short category are: "Feral," "Get a Horse!," "Mr. Hublot," "Possessions," and "Room on the Broom."
"Get a Horse!," directed by Lauren MacMullan, looks like a lost black-and-white Mickey cartoon from the 1930s before it bursts into color and 3D. It is likely the most seen of the nominees, it screens before Disney's blockbuster hit "Frozen" in theaters. "Mr. Hublot," directed by Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares, shows a lonely man with OCD adopting a stray dog. Witz and Espigares have created a world that seems to be assembled from debris: Mr. Hublot himself has a clicking counter in his forehead, while the dog he takes in is a clanking mechanical pooch with a toaster for a body. "Possessions," directed by Shuhei Morita, is the story of a man who, caught in the forest during a storm, takes shelter in what appears to be an abandoned house. After a night there, the contents of the house - umbrellas, cabinets, even piles of rubbish - come to life and imprison him. The short is based on a Japanese proverb that says possessions come to life after they've been abandoned for 100 years. "Room on the Broom, " directed by Max Lang and Jan Lachauer, includes Gillian Anderson as a witch who keeps losing things and gaining passengers on her broomstick, and Simon Pegg as the narrator. The short is based on the British children's book by Julia Donaldson. The 86th Annual Academy Awards will be handed out in a live telecast ceremony from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, March 2nd. |
