LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM (JUNE 2, 2013) (REUTERS) - Angelina Jolie turns 38 on June 4. The Oscar winning actress made headlines over the weekend, making her first public appearances since revealing she had undergone a double mastectomy to elude cancer.
Jolie revealed her medical decision on May 14 in an opinion piece for the New York Times. She acknowledged that she underwent a double mastectomy after learning she had inherited a high risk of breast cancer and said she hoped her story would inspire other women fighting the life-threatening disease.
Jolie is engaged to fellow actor Brad Pitt and they have six children together.
She won an Oscar as best supporting actress for her 1999 role in the film "Girl, Interrupted."
Jolie made her directorial debut with "In the Land of Blood and Honey" in 2011, a love story between a Serbian soldier and a Bosnian prisoner of war, set during the 1992-95 Bosnian War. The film received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Jolie's next project is the upcoming Disney film "Maleficent" in which she plays the title character. It's slated for a July 2014 release.
