She's donated her latest single "I was Here" to the cause, which honours victims of disasters and those who help them. UN Humanitarian Chief, Valerie Amos, was at the General Assembly in New York this month (August 10) where B recorded the video. Valerie Amos, U.N. Humanitarian Relief coordinator, saying "There was a real feeling of celebration and also quite a lot of excitement that Beyonce herself was there. I think when we all saw her record the song and we saw the images from the kinds of things that have happened in our world, flooding, earthquakes, the contributions that people have made, I think a lot of us cried." The campaign, which first launched in 2008, asks people to send messages of support and to give up their time to help others. For Amos this meant helping a local charity to prepare sandwiches for New York's homeless. However the day shouldn't be seen as a one off and instead encourage people to do more in future. Valerie Amos, U.N. Humanitarian Relief coordinator, saying "For us going forward it's all about those millions of people who have now signed up. It's about how over the next year and beyond that we support them in making sure that they stand by their commitments and think about new ones. I think this is a platform that we can really use going forward." Beyonce's hoping to do her bit to spread the message. Others backing the campaign include Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Rihanna as well the B's husband Jay-Z. |
