British Artists Dominate 2014'S BRIT Award Nominations

British artists Bastille and Disclosure lead the nominations for the BRIT Awards, given four nods each for the UK's premier music awards.

LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (JANUARY 9, 2014) (REUTERS) -  British pop acts Disclosure and Bastille led the field at the BRIT Award nominations for 2014 with four nominations each on Thursday (January 9), on a night largely dominated by British newcomers.

Alternative rock band Bastille and the electronic duo Disclosure, consisting of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence, were both in the running for best British group and British breakthrough act of the year, while also competing for best single and best album.

Drum and bass dance collective Rudimental received three nods for British Single, British Group and Album of the Year.

Band member Kesi Dryden said the multiple nominations showed how much they had achieved in the last 12 months.

"Amazing. We've come on such a long way since last year so we're really excited," he told Reuters Television.

Newcomer Sam Smith was the talk of the night, having received the accolade of the BRITs Critics Choice Award, making him the tastemakers' favourite.

Clutching his award, designed by Philip Treacy - who has created memorable headgear for the likes of Lady Gaga and Madonna - Smith said it was a dream come true.

"I'd worked very hard because I really wanted this award, like I don't want to beat around the bush, I watched every single year and it's my, it was my dream to get it and I really worked hard and fought to get it," he said.

Last year's Critic's Choice winner, Tom Odell, picked up two nominations this time around, for British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.

Pop singer Ellie Goulding also received three nominations.

In the international categories, Bruno Mars - who is performing at the award show - was nominated for International Male along with Drake, Eminem, John Grant and Justin Timberlake.

Janelle MonaeKaty PerryLady Gaga, Lorde and Pink were up for International Female, while Arcade Fire, Daft Punk, Haim, Kings of Leon, Macklemore and Ryan Lewiscompete for International Album.

Miley Cyrus, who dominated music headlines throughout 2013 was a notable emission from the list of nominees.

The BRIT Awards 2014 will be held at The O2 in London on February 19.
