MTV announce who they think will be the big names in 2013. LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (NOVEMBER 28, 2012) (REUTERS) - MTV launched their Brand New for 2013 recently at the Kentish Town Forum in London, bringing together most of the nominees who they believe will be the big names in music next year. This year, their selection includes nine signed acts and one unsigned act - some of which have very unusual backstories. The fast-rapping motormouth Angel Haze is hitting 2013 with her Freddy Krueger inspired video 'Werkin Girls' and told Reuters TV at the launch about her unusual relationship with music over the year. "I wasn't allowed to listen to music growing up. I sort of grew up in a cult. So when I turned 16 I met a friend who introduced me to music, rap music and I sucked at first but I worked really hard to make it better and now here I am." K. Koke (also known as Kevin Georgiou) hails from Stonebridge in North West London and was last year acquitted of all charges in an attempted murder trial after seven months in remand. He's part of the underground rap crew U.S.G. and performed at the Brand New event in London. Kodaline are already a success story. Their previous band name 21 Demands were the first unsigned band to reach number one in Ireland. Now as Kodaline, they are due to release an as yet untitled album in 2013. Their single 'All I Want' has been causing buzz because of its unusual music video. The band's singer Stephen Garrigan told Reuters TV at the event: "We're basically just writing in our diary and passing it around people to comment on so we're talking about ups and downs and life in general as cliched and cheesy as that is, though." From January 14 2013, voting for each of the acts will open on MTV's Brand New website with the most popular being announced on February 1 2013. |
