MTV announce who they think will be the big names in 2013. LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (NOVEMBER 28, 2012) (MTV) - MTV launched their Brand New for 2013 recently at the Kentish Town Forum in London bringing together most of the nominees who they believe will be the big names in music next year. This year, their selection includes nine signed acts and one unsigned act. Rascals are just one of the acts nominated for MTV's Brand New for 2013. They were previously known as Little Rascals but now they're not so little anymore. The quartet from Bow in East London performed their latest track 'Fire Blaze' at the launch event for the nominees. Gabrielle Aplin started her music career doing quirky covers of hit singles on YouTube and is now signed to Parlophone. Her single 'The Power of Love' - a cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's classic song - has been used in a Christmas advert for retailer John Lewis and has also topped the charts in the UK. She told Reuters TV at the event: "I've always wanted to do this but I didn't realise that my rooting and the way I did it was going to be my doorway into it. I just started putting my music on-line and it grew over the years and I grew a fan base over the years online and then my manager got involved with me and made me realise what I was actually doing and I just carried on doing it and it worked. And that's what I've been working on." Disclosure are another act nominated bringing dance music to the selection. The brothers Guy andHoward Lawrence have seen their popularity steadily grow since they released their debut single back in September 2010. But it's only now that success is dawning on them. Guy told Reuters TV at the event: "I guess every show when more and more people were there and started playing to bigger and bigger crowds and it just builds and builds and once we got Latch out which is the single we've got out now that got into the Top 15, which is crazy and we were like this is serious now." Tom Odell has not only been picked for this shortlist but also for the Brit Awards Critics Choice. The 21-year-old singer claims to be obsessed with music although he does find it difficult listening to his own material. "I don't really like listening to my music that much apart from when I'm recording when I'll listen to it loads and then I hate it because I've heard it so many times. So by the time anyone else has heard it I've normally heard it 100 times so I don't feel that good about it after that many times, yeah." Finishing off the list of signed acts is Haim. They are three sisters from Los Angeles, one of which, Este, is known for her wild behaviour during live shows. The final act is Ebony Day, who has become a YouTube sensation and is currently studying at theAcademy of Contemporary Music. She is the only act not to be signed to a major record label. From January 14 2013, voting for each of the acts will open on MTV's Brand New website with the most popular being announced on February 1 2013. |
